Distemper or emulsion: which should you choose?

The real difference between distemper and emulsion paint for homes in rural Bengal: cost, finish, washability and how long each lasts.

Distemper and emulsion are both water-based interior paints, and both come in hundreds of shades. The difference shows up a year or two later: when a child draws on the wall, when the monsoon brings damp, or when you try to wipe off a stain.

What you pay

Distemper costs the least. For a typical 2-room house, choosing a good emulsion instead adds a few thousand rupees in paint. Labour is the same either way, so the gap in the total bill is smaller than people expect. Check the exact difference on this week’s price list.

How it looks

  • Distemper gives a flat, chalky matt finish. Fine on ceilings and in rooms that don’t get much wear.
  • Emulsion gives a smoother, richer finish, and colours look deeper. Premium emulsions such as Silk Glamor add a soft sheen.

Can you clean it?

This is the biggest practical difference.

  • Distemper marks easily, and scrubbing a stain usually takes the paint off with it.
  • Washable emulsions such as Easy Clean let you wipe off most everyday marks with a damp cloth.

If there are children at home, or for kitchens, stair walls and the room where guests sit, emulsion pays for itself.

How long it lasts

Distemper usually needs repainting sooner. A good emulsion on a properly primed wall keeps its colour and finish noticeably longer. Over ten years, that can mean one repaint instead of two, and labour is the bigger cost each time.
